Why buy steelbooks

MP3 files. If you want the best audio-visual experience, you can still justify sticking with physical media because it has uncompressed picture and sound, plus bonus extras.

And they hold their value very well, as some Steelbooks famously sell for silly money. Or this Ultra HD Ghostbusters box-set? Should we let ourselves be so easily swayed by swanky packaging and eye-catching artwork, or keep focused on the objective quality of the format the movies are being presented in? Sign in. Why this deluxe disc packaging is driving me crazy. Dan Owen Follow. They have edge-to-edge artwork , which is usually much better than the normal releases.

The designs are often incredibly cool and original, and the metal cases means artwork can even be embossed. You can remove and dispose of those, or keep them and perhaps one day sell on for even more money.

This is where the SteelBook comes in. A SteelBook is a limited run of a Blu-ray or game, packaged in a premium metal case - often with classic or specially commissioned artwork. The steel case provides both a better canvas for displaying the fantastic art that accompanies many films, as well as being a more durable way of storing the disks.

Most of the SteelBooks available here at Zavvi are both exclusive to us and limited edition, making them a very accessible but worthwhile collector's item. Indeed, you should also keep an eye on the collector's edition versions of a lot of games, too, as they often include a SteelBook. As mentioned when one of our team was interviewed by SteelBookbluray. From the perspective of our own catalogue, Zavvi will propose titles to the various studios and the process will move from there.

Sometimes studios will ask us to release a title exclusively — usually with new cinema releases. Other times certain films will need signing off and approving by some of the biggest names in film — for instance Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro have all been involved in signing off various SteelBooks at one stage or another.

Currently the only top limit on how many we produce is consumer demand. We, and many others, can see SteelBooks becoming the main way physical films are released in the not-so-distant future — especially as a way of differentiating them from streaming services. Most of the time we can predict whether a SteelBook will be a big seller or a more niche release, and these calculated guesses form the basis of how many we produce.

There are always examples, though, where demand totally outstrips our predictions — or the opposite. When we propose a title to the studios, we often also suggest certain ideas about the artwork.

There have been occasions where we have decided not to produce a SteelBook version of a film solely due to the lack of solid artwork, and new artwork can take years to be commissioned and signed off. Image from: Life of Pi User Name Remember Me?

Member since: Feb Blu-ray collection: Trading Score: Why do you buy your steelbooks? Simple question really. Do you buy them because your a collector and just wish to purchase for yourself or maybe you buy a few additional copies as well just to sell on when they appreciate in value so you can maybe make something back some day. Member since: Jul DVD collection: Blu-ray reviews: Top contributor.

Home Theater Gallery: Digital collection: I collect for myself to love and watch and cherish forever and ever. Thus, it's a bit of a secondary incentive that I buy them because they look better than the amaray versions and I believe they may last longer. For the most part, I just want something special for the movies I like.

Steelbook is my preferred case, so I will buy that over anything else. Then it's Digibook. Everything else I'm not fussed about. I still won't sell them, regardless of the fact that I won't ever watch them. Home Theater Gallery: 3. I collect them. I collected tons of DVD steelbooks now Ive moved onto blu-ray.

Member since: Aug Trading Score: 1. I prefer them over the regular cases. I just really like movie memorabilia stuff. Shame polls don't allow multiple options. My secondary reason is to kind of help bring income in since i'm a student and not in a regular job so i'll sell them when possible. That's another motivation recently but i absolutely love the look of them and the feel of them over regular amarays I wouldn't like to be called a scalper tbh but if i was called that i would understand but i don't exactly buy s or s, i usually buy what i can which is a modest amount on a students balance so i can raise a little more and grow my collection of steelbooks and buy more of the things i love.

Wouldn't say the motivation is primarily greed and profiteering but when your selling stuff, thats naturally gonna be a small element for almost everyone to make the most possible and as much as they can. I buy them if the original cover art is shit really. Thanks given by: L. Find More Posts by Foggy. Blu-ray reviews: 4. Steelbooks are just my treat to myself.
