When I started writing, back in the early Seventies, I found I had no vocabulary for describing buildings. I read a couple of books on architecture and developed an interest in cathedrals. I became a bit of a 'train spotter' on the subject. I would go to a town, like Lincoln or Winchester, check into a hotel and spend a couple of days looking around the cathedral and learning about it.

Before too long, it occurred to me to channel this enthusiasm into a novel. When I started talking about the idea, some of my friends were quite shocked. I can't wait for readers to immerse themselves in Ken's vivid imagination. Now having read The Evening and the Morning , I can say it is a tour de force of epic storytelling.

Ken Follet is the master story-teller,building the beautiful Kingbridge cathedral with no tool, but a tool which is powerful than most- his pen.

The author clearly has done a lot of research on cathedral layouts, styles, history and so on. Indeed he mentions in his foreword that it is something that utterly fascinates him.

The book is a long read and could've done with some serious paring. At it's heart lies the story of a cathedral, its conception and eventual rise. The characters are Shankar Venkat Certified Buyer.
