What is the difference between muhkam and mutashabih

Surely the ayat of the Qur'an do not contradict one another. There are two methodologies for explaining the mutashabihat ayat of the Qur'an , and both of them are valid:. For the most part, this methodology consisted of giving general explanations, since the scholars of the Salaf believed that these ayat have meanings befitting to the perfection of Allah. Rather than saying what these meanings are, they referred these mutashabihat ayat to the muhkamat ayat.

Furthermore, the Arabs during these three centuries spoke the Arabic language with a natural disposition and great eloquence.

Their understanding of its meanings was so sharp that they did not need to attribute specific meanings to the mutashabihat aya t. Instead, they understood that these ayat have meanings that befit Allah , and that it is impossible that they would have sensuous and physical meanings that do not befit Allah. Nevertheless, it is well known that some of the scholars of the Salaf did attribute specific meanings to mutashabihat aya t. He said, " illa mulkahu ," i. The Khalaf were the scholars who lived after the first three centuries.

For the most part, this methodology consisted of giving specific meanings to the mutashabihat ayat. The scholars of the Khalaf lived at a time when the people started to lose their natural disposition for the Arabic language.

Seeing that the people had become weaker in the language, the scholars of the Khalaf feared that those with perversity in their hearts would read meanings into the mutashabihat ayat that do not befit Allah.

Allah said:. Referring them to the muhkamat ayat , they gave specific meanings to the mutashabihat ayat in compliance with the language and the Religion. They gave correct, acceptable meanings to the mutashabihat ayat. The latter say, "We believe in it, all of it is from our Lord" and none will understand the message except men of comprehension.

Among those who have perversity in their hearts are the mushabbihah , those who liken Allah to His creation. In it are verses that are entirely clear, until, And none receive admonition except men of understanding. Similarly, Allah said, And your Lord comes, and the angels, in rows.

They interpret in a way that does not contradict the accepted views and principles. If they cannot do this, they accept it to mean what Allah had willed it to mean. This method of approach is the best and the most cautious. Many people try to uncover the meanings of these verses but because of the corruption in their hearts, they cannot understand them. Those who are sound and firm in their knowledge accept all these without needing to understand their exact meanings and say that they, take the meaning in whichever way Allah desires it to be understood.

They carry implications that agree with the Muhkamat clear-cut Ayahs in certain regards and differ from them in others. Thus, their intended meaning become unclear to people. But anyone who refers to the self-explanatory, clear-cut Ayahs to understand in their light such similar yet not entirely clear Ayahs, will clearly perceive their intended meanings and will be guided to the right path. He created him from dust, then He said to him: "Be! And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: "We believe in it; the whole of it clear and unclear Verses are from our Lord.

They explain the Mutashabih in the light of the Muhkam, and so any misinterpretation is eliminated. They explain and interpret the Mutashabih without referring to the Muhkam with the aim of sowing the seeds of doubt and unrest in the hearts of the believers.

Therefore, it is correct that a reader pause at the word "knowledge" in the Saying of Allah Exalted be He And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge Those who are firmly grounded in knowledge understand the Mutashabih and their meanings by referring to the Muhkam. Allah Exalted be He says: Await they just for the final fullfilment of the event?
