Radiology residency how long

Over , imaging studies are performed annually. Resource-rich and opportunity-laden best describe our program. Clinical care, medical student and fellow resident education, and clinical and basic science research opportunities abound.

Preparing our residents for early success in patient care delivery and required national benchmarking are top priorities for the Department. This curriculum begins in July after the new radiology residents have arrived. Our attendings have honed these lectures for several years. The result is a wonderful mix of introductory lectures in all radiology subspecialties that provide a solid basis incorporating all the new information residents learn in their first year of radiology.

These lectures occur in the few months prior to July, when a new cohort of second-year radiology residents take lower level call and third-year residents begin taking upper level call. The wide variety of emergency radiology cases used by attendings during these lectures are often derived from real cases seen by residents while on their call shifts. The focus of the PGY-5 year is review, consolidation and exam preparation. Residents are given greater responsibility and at the completion of their residency they should be functioning at the level of a junior consultant.

Core rotations include general radiology 3 blocks and mammography 1 block. Senior residents have considerable flexibility choosing rotations in their final year. Several years ago the Residency Program invested in web conferencing equipment to link all three teaching hospitals in London to provide better continuity for educational rounds. This allows regular teaching to occur twice daily through subspecialty rounds which are broadcast to all of the residents without requiring them to travel across the city.

All of our residents therefore receive equal learning opportunities regardless of the site or rotation. At Western University we have embraced new and exciting digital and online learning resources including programs such as eAnatomy, RadPrimer and StatDx. Most rotations also have a structured reading outline including a pre-test and post-test to monitor progress towards meeting all of the learning objectives.
